How Equity Derivatives Differ from Trading Stocks

Although both approaches provide exposure to equity markets, several important differences distinguish equity derivatives from direct stock ownership.

    When investors purchase shares, they become partial owners of the company. Depending on the share class, they may receive voting rights, dividends, and other shareholder benefits.


    Equity derivatives, by contrast, generally do not provide ownership rights. Instead, they represent contractual agreements whose value depends on the underlying asset's performance.

    Buying shares requires paying the full market value of the investment.


    Many equity derivatives require only an initial margin or premium, allowing investors to control a larger market position with less capital. While this improves capital efficiency, it also increases leverage and potential risk.

    Direct stock investments generally profit when prices rise. Equity derivatives offer considerably greater flexibility.
